On the St. Thomas AFF blogsite there's a posting about a good article from Mark Shea on this fundamental aspect of Catholic scripture study.Language is not only an integral aspect of what it means to be human, it is also a vehicle that God uses to reach us. Really, it is his invention. However, language as a medium of communication is also rife with problems of misunderstanding. That's what makes the guidance of Holy Mother Church so important in approaching such a complex & deeply profound work as the Bible. Since it came from the Church to begin with, we cannot come to correctly understand its meanings without her.
BTW, Shea's book By What Authority is pretty good. I'll have to post a review of it sometime.
